Different Energy Sources

We require different sources of energy to live and work. These include wind, solar geothermal, biomass, as well as geothermal sources. These sources are not just a major source for electricity, but also can be used for heating and transport. The major issue with these sources of energy is that they may cause greenhouse gas emissions when they are burned to generate electricity. This leads to the need for more environmentally sustainable energy sources.

The most popular kind of energy is fossil fuels, which consist of coal, oil, and natural gas. They were created thousands of years ago when prehistoric animals and plants died and were buried under layers of sedimentary rocks. If the conditions were right these fossil fuels slowly transformed into carbon-rich materials that, when burned create energy. These fossil fuels are not renewable since they will exhaust in our lifetimes, or in many lifetimes.

Renewable energy sources are constantly replenished. The primary renewable energy source is sunlight, which gives heat and light. It is used to power our homes and businesses as well to drive vehicles. Wind is another renewable energy source, which produces electricity by spinning turbines. We have been using it since people first discovered how to harvest the wind for millennia. We use biological processes create an ethanol (a alcohol-like substance that is clear and transparent that can be used for fuel) from crops and waste.

Of all these sources hydropower is the most significant renewable energy source in the United States, though wind and biofuels are predicted to take the lead soon. Hydropower uses the natural water cycle to harness the water’s rapid flow, which in turn can be used to produce electricity.
